Born on August 7, 1978 in Santa Monica, California. He is the youngest of three children.
- Parents divorce when he is young, sending him back and forth between USA and Taiwan to visit each of them.
- Returns to Taiwan, settles down in USA when he was in 2nd Grade. Mother remarries and gives birth to his two half sisters.

Age 18: Lands a role as a background dancer in the Run DMC’s music video, It’s like That. Saves money (working for a phone company) so that he can buy an airplane ticket to Taiwan and chase his dream of going to show business.
Age 18.5: Makes it to Tiawan, but leads a poor, difficult life. Buys all his meals from gas stations and sleeps on friends’ sofas. Sends a demo to many record companies, but none reply. Auditions for MTV’s Fresh VJ contest, but gets rejected.
Age 19: Enters the Super Sunday ABC Beauty contest. Spotted by a talent scout, offered a staring role Tiawanese college drama TV show Meteor Garden. The show turns him into a teen heartthrob. Converts from Buddhism to Christianity.
Age 24: Releases his debut solo album, Body Will Sing. It would be awarded as one of the Top 10 Selling Mandarin Albums of the Year. Selected by Columbia Pictures (Hollywood) to play the role of younger Genghis Khan.
Age 25: Stars in a Hong Kong action/romance film Star Runner as Bond Cheung, an aspiring Muay Thai boxer. Nominated for a Hong Kong Film Award (Best New Artist) for this role.
Age 28: Meets his current girlfriend Arissa, daughter of a Singaporean business tycoon, in the filming of his music video ‘My Kingdom.”
Age 29: His band is at the peak of their popularity, but Vanness is not happy. He is unable to do the kind of music he loves (presumably due to corporate pressure), and he feels like he’s losing direction in life.
Age 31: Stars in Taiwanese soap-opera Autumn’s Concerto, which breaks all previous ratings records in Taiwan. Venness calls the shoot “an emotional roller coaster.” Releases his first Japanese album, “Reflections,” which debuts in the top ten of Japan’s Oricon charts. Invite to perform live at the MTV Music Video Awards in Japan.
Age 32: Releases his third Mandarin solo album. The title track ‘Is This All’ features a US-based friend, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic. Stars in Material Queen, a Taiwanese romance drama with Lynn Hung as the female lead. The drama was filmed with locations in Taiwan and France.
Age 33: Stars in Ti Amo Chocolate where he plays as a successor of a family business who is very passionate about opening a chocolate store.
- Takes part in the Christian movement called the Moral Revolution that argues for sex only within marriage.
- Vanness is a creative director for Reebok (Greater China Division)
